I have a sweet tooth. But I also want to be healthy. Life is rough. Each week, I select a somewhat healthy treat to share with all of you. This satisfies my crazy sweet tooth and my insatiable curiosity to try new things. Some treats I make, some treats I buy, and some treats are gifts from the people and brands I love. This week, I’m reviewing Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Coconut Caramel Chocolate Chip – and this one is real good.
Welcome to Treat of the Week!
I am a sucker for sale. The first thing I do when I enter the supermarket is grab a circular and scour for a dessert (read: ice cream) sale. This week, I saw a 3 for $10 sale on Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt. And because my supermarket is awesome, I don’t have to buy all 3 to get the sale price. Let’s get into it:
About Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt
In 2009 kindergarten friends Amanda Klane and Drew Harrington had a sweet idea to make a dope and delicious low-cal dessert featuring natural ingredients and good-for-you nutritional benefits. It took them 2 years to perfect their recipe but finally, in 2011 Yasso was finally born. The brand was a huge market disruptor and is currently sold in over 15,000+ stores nationwide.
The Good Stuff
It’s shocking how little this ice cream tastes of Greek yogurt. I expected something way more tart! But the ice cream is sweet and wonderfully creamy. On a blind taste test, I would not have known this was a greek yogurt base. I was totally fooled!
Don’t you hate when you get chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and there’s like 2 pieces of cookie dough? Or you get a thing of cherry Garcia and it’s like full of 150 cherries and no ice cream (this has happened to me). Each pint has a great balance of mix-ins to ice cream ratio. The pint was perfectly balanced and every spoon had just the right amount of toppings.
The base ice cream flavor was coconut and it was incredibly potent and coconut-y without being overpowering. At a 150 calories per serving with 6 grams of protein, this is a diet friendly ice cream I can fuck with.
The Not Good Stuff
I had a hard time picking a flavor! And not because Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt doesn’t have plenty of options – but because I was not overly impressed with the ingredients. Some of the flavors had corn starch and a bunch of ingredients I couldn’t even pronounce. I don’t love when my food sounds like a science experiment. Because I know the brand is committed to being healthy, I trust that they’re trying their best to balance taste, flavor, and good ingredients. But the reality is – when you’re making a party cake flavored anything, there’s gonna be some stuff you probably don’t want to put in your body.
Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt is not alone in this. A lot of dairy-free and “healthy” ice creams are in this boat. Getting to that creamy ice cream texture might need the help of some thickeners that are hard to pronounce. I landed on the coconut flavor is because it had the “best” ingredients. was simply less
Also, while this isn’t a negative for me, some people might find this ice cream too sweet, especially if you’re expecting the tartness of typical Greek yogurt.
