Grocery shopping is one of my all-time favorite weekend activities. A grocery store = endless culinary possibilities. In this new weekly feature on The Insatiable Life, I’ll share my weekly grocery haul and list of all the recipes I plan to tackle. At the end of the week, I’ll update the post with links to the recipes that were actually made. And for reference, I try to keep my grocery shopping under $50 and I plan for meals that will feed at least 2 people.
All About This Week’s Grocery Haul
This week’s grocery haul came from Super Foodtown on 160th and Broadway in Washington Heights. If you live uptown and have been complaining about our lack of great grocery stores, than you have to check out this Super Foodtown. Don’t be fooled by the brand name – this is the nicest Super Foodtown you’ve ever seen.
They carry an excellent selection of produce, they have more styles of vegan yogurt than I ever knew existed, and still carry many of the ethnic foods that make a local Washington Heights supermarket so appealing. They also stock a bunch of gourmet items, their rotisserie chicken is really good, and they have a killer cheese section. It helps that the staff are so wonderful and nice. Plus, the store is huge and I’ve never had to wait on a line more than 30-45 seconds. I swear, this place is heavenly.
Now down to business. When I shop, I don’t always use a shopping list. Sometimes I will, if I have a recipe that calls for specific things with ingredients I’m unfamiliar with and likely to forget. But more often than not, I have my budget and I set some weekly parameters. For this week, my parameters were no meat or fish and make sure produce is half of the total grocery items.
On my way to the store I came up with 3-4 recipes I knew I could make based on what I have in my fridge and my pantry. This allowed me to purchase items that would either elevate those meals or give me inspiration for something new. Everytime I cook, it’s a creative pursuit so I also like to be guided by what’s in season and what the weekly store deals are. Here’s what I picked up on this week’s grocery haul.

I’ve been trying to having a more plant based diet. Asides from eating out, I think I’m doing a pretty good job of sticking to this at home. Today, I focused on picking up lots of green vegetables and then got a few pantry staples like a bag of pasta and some bouillon cubes. There were also other life necessities like Dish Soap and Carpet Cleaner because our dog Mochi has left odor on everything this summer.
There were a few other things I wanted to get like extra cans of chopped tomatoes and coconut milk, but I think I have enough in my pantry to last at least another week. So those items were not included in this week’s grocery haul. In addition to what’s on this list, I also have the following items in my fridge to rely on for this week’s meals.
